an introduction to lining
Authentic and meticulous in execution, lining (sometimes referred to as ‘pinstriping’ offers a finishing touch to the restoration of historic vehicles and can be used in conjunction with traditional signwriting.
Undertaken by hand, using no tape, I have lined out miles worth of lines within the industries I specialise it, most notably on steam engines.
This work is supported by my extensive knowledge of lining schemes for steam and heritage vehicles and I bring this to the fore to undertake lining work that ensures a true and authentic restoration, with regard to the colours used and the widths of lines applied.

research
To begin any project, I undertake research - of photographs, manufacturing build sheets and other historic documentation - which informs the line widths to be painted.
refine
If relevant, colour research and tests are undertaken at this stage, to give you a visual indication of how the lining will work.
execute
To execute the work, my tools are traditional and authentic: enamel paint applied with a brush, supported with the use of a mahl stick and palette. If required, I am adept at gold leaf application.
communicate
My approach when undertaking a project is to remain in conversation with the client at each stage, adapting the work and process depending on their feedback.
