TRADITIONAL SIGNWRITER & EDUCATOR

As well as working to commission, I am adept at sharing my research and work through various education strands: talks, workshops, exhibitions and teaching.

If you’d like to commission me to work in an educational context - whether that’s to facilitate a workshop, deliver a talk or create work for an exhibition, please get in touch.

educational opportunities

My upbringing around travelling steam fairs, love of research and passion for the craft of signwriting has led me to establish my practice as both a traditional signwriter and educator.

Here, I work with institutions, museums and archives to deliver audience-facing material that engages the public with the craft of traditional signwriting, as well as fairground art and fairground women.

This is supported by my work as a Curatorial Trustee of the Fairground Heritage Trust and my PhD Doctoral Study (undertaken between 2016-2020).

phd

In 2020 I was awarded a Practice-Led PhD for my work re-establishing the identities of twentieth-century travelling fairground women through the construction of an illustrative archive. Here, traditional signwriting was used to illustratively tell stories of the females’ lives. This study was underpinned by extensive research undertaken at The National Fairground and Circus Archive (NFCA), who upon completion of my doctoral studies commissioned a film to be produced documenting my research and work, both commercially and in an educational context. The PhD was part-funded by the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST) who support excellence in British Craft.
