‘PRE-VINYLETTES’ SUFFRAGETTE CENTENNIAL
portland, usa, 2020
I was invited to create a sign as part of a unique group exhibition of hand-painted signs made exclusively by women signwriters to commemorate the landmark anniversary of women’s rights in the United States. Following a period of research into the Suffragette Movement in the USA, I learnt that women would often show their bloomers when cycling as an act of defiance.
I used this idea, as well as a play on words to appeal to a contemporary audience, as my influence for this sign. Excitingly, this exhibition gave me scope to explore using pictorial elements as part of handprinted signage. The exhibition was installed for six weeks before moving to other galleries across the US.
