FEARLESS
A studio-based job over a short period of time was to undertake the signwriting and lining on ‘Fearless’, a 6” Foden C Type wagon. The signwriting and lining work was undertaken by working from old photographs and with an awareness of scale, due to the size of the Foden.

The wider project that the owners were undertaking was to replicate the WJ King livery, who historically had used Foden wagons as part of their quarry and contracting business in the Bishops Lydeard area of Taunton. As such, it was important to work with the historic photographs of these wagons and recreate the signwriting as exactly as possible: maintaining the original signwriter’s decisions of spacing and signwriting some number plates to match!
the process
Working to a 6” scale meant adjusting the lining widths and scale of the lettering so it didn’t overpower the size of the wagon, but remained as true to the working day photographs as possible. Little details that were signwritten include the speed of the wagon – 12 m.p.h – and an old-fashioned way of denoting a telephone number: Phone 3 Bishops Lydeard.
